Bishop
John Baptist Minder was ordained Bishop of Keimoes on 10 January 1968 in
Matjieskloof and he remained at the helm of the diocese for the next 32 years
until his retirement in 2000, when his successor Bishop Edward Risi was
appointed. After
his retirement as bishop he spent three years as pastor of Onseepkans on the
Orange River. This was indicative of the pastor he had always been throughout
his years as bishop of the Diocese of Keimoes. Bishop
Minder was an Oblate of Francis de Sales and came from Philadelphia in the
United States as a missionary to Southern Africa. He worked as a priest in
the Diocese of Keetmanshoop in Namibia and in the Diocese of Keimoes, South
Africa. He
will be remembered for being a pastorally minded bishop who always made the
pastoral concerns of the diocese his priority: finding pastors for the
faithful and supporting the priests who were his co-workers. He always spoke
of vocations at times like confirmations and other diocesan functions.
Vocations for the sisters, brothers and priests was a concern of his over the
years and he took the first steps to firmly establish the local diocesan
clergy, who numbered seven at the time of his retirement in 2000. He
had a natural inclination to keep abreast of events by reading and studying.
He persevered over dusty and corrugated roads to visit around the diocese
year after year, meeting priests and laity. This took its toll on his health
and in the last years he suffered poor health until the time his resignation
was accepted at the age of 77. His
episcopate began soon after the Second Vatican Council and he furthered the
groundbreaking work of his predecessor, Bishop Esser, in setting up diocesan
and pastoral structures for the laity and the clergy. His commitment to
Catholic education saw the establishment of the CIE (Catholic Institute of
Education) office in Upington. He was assisted for many years by Bro. Gert
Smith in organising catechetics in the diocese. He also took care to foster
two offices for welfare and development within the diocese: NAMKO based in
Namaqualand and KOOR based in the Upington area. He also supported the work
of the Afrikaans Apostolate in the translation of the Mass texts and other
liturgical books into Afrikaans. He
retired from pastoral work in 2005 and resided in the parish house which he
built for retired clergy - he remained here until the time of his death. In
his last years he endeared himself to the faithful of Upington and they cared
for his needs, especially the Sisters of Francis de Sales and Bro. Reginald
April OSFS until his death. His
funeral took place at Pella on 26 August and his remains were interred in the
Cathedral in Pella. |
